Evaluation For adding music

I was tasked with adding music to a scene. We had to use Garage band in order to accomplish this task and the music genre could have been anything from our choice. I decided to use the chase scene in No Country For Old Men. The main character "Llewlynn" (Josh Brolin) is running away from psychopathic hitman "Anton" (Jaiver Bardem). The scene itself contains absolutely no music and is possibly one of the most tense chase scene because of its absence of music. So when it came to thinking about what songs I was going to put in there, it had to be songs that were composed with high  tension and pace in mind. One song from Payday 2 called "Where is the Van?!" by Simon Viklund came to mind as the song has the feeling as if you are being chased. The game itself is about pulling off heists and for me one the tracks that resembles barley making an escape was that one.

I decided to put another track from a slightly different genre of music in just to see if the scene changed at all. I chose a track from X-Men: First Class. The scene where Eric goes to a bar to find out about the man he has been searching for. The scene has an aspect of horror and the constant build of tension because of the music used. The song itself is called "Frankenstein's monster" by Henry Jackman and you are supposed to see Eric/Magneto's ruthlessness as he kills the people in the bar for their part in the holocaust. The same music used there worked brilliantly in No Country For Old Men as you want Josh Brolin's character to get away from the hitman and with every shot and action you feel as the hitman is only getting closer and closer.

When adding the music to this scene I had to make a not of when the action really starts and place my music there. I suffered the problem of the music not really matching some scenes and not lasting too long which made my positioning even more crucial. More often than not the songs would end before the scene did just because I wanted the tension of the scene to remain.

When creating the music for the scene, it was difficult for me to think about what genre of music I should put in there. I ended up having a sort of scifi tense music being included in there because it suited the scene. Although the movie was not Sci Fi I still think it worked well. Just like the other tracks, I decided to have the music finish just before the end of the scene so that it still retains its intensity.

In conclusion, adding music to the Hotel chase scene was challenging but was interesting because of all the options that the scene created. Because the scene has absolutely no music, I could add in anything I wanted that had a build in intensity. As for creating my own music, it was challenging and I was not entirely satisfied with how it sounded but it still was apt for the scene. Overall adding your own music to a scene or music from another scene can completely change the mood of it and make it that more interesting.
