Fight Club

The use of sound in Fight Club

In Fight Club the big twist of the entire movie is that the narrator (Edward Norton) is Tyler Durden (Brad Pit) and has been the entire movie. This comes to ahead in the scene where Tyler is breaking down everything that has happened in the movie so far in a hotel. The use of sound in this scene is used in an extremely clever way as we find out what has really happened in the movie. This done by the use of music, special effects and dialogue.

Music
Music in this scene is used as a tension builder. Although nothing particularly dramatic happens, it is used to build up to a memory flash. Every time the narrator has one the music speeds up and the second it ends it slows down back to its building phase. This continues up until the line "little by little you're just letting yourself become... Tyler Durden" has been spoken. That is when it completely stops. The music is all non diegetic and forces the audience to pay more attention to what is happening in this scene.
Special effects
The special effects used in this scene are closely related to how somebody might have a memory flash. Whatever the Narrator remembers and hears in one of his flashes is echoed. All of the sounds are hyper realistic. They are amplified and made louder just as a memory might sound. Aside from this there are not that many sound effects used in this scene because it is so important to the rest of the movie

Dialogue
There is a lot of dialogue in this scene because, as stated before, this is a very important scene. It explains the big twist of the whole movie. From the beginning to the end there is lots of talking. This is mostly exposition and an explanation of what has already happened. The dialogue here is both functional and naturalistic because the way the Narrator speaks towards Tyler is how a normal person would react when something like this would happen but it also moves the scene onwards. This element combined with the music makes this scene really impactful and one of the more poignant parts of the movie.

Conclusion
In conclusion the use of all of these elements make the Becoming Tyler Durden scene of Fight Club extremely memorable. The music makes the audience feel like the Narrator when we are confused and what is said stands out because of how interesting it is. The special effects make the scene are too real as well with the echoes really making the Narrator realise what has happened. This is why this is one of the best twists in recent memory for movies.
